Soldaten im Einsatz

This is a blog dedicated to the Fallschirmjäger (German Paratrooper) of World War Two. This is not intended to glorify, incite any political/racial ideology, or for that matter lighten the matters of combat in WWII. It is intended for those who have an interest in this fascinating and illustrious part of human history.
The main theme will be about the Fallschirmjäger, but also other armed forces of Germany in WWII.

  • Shirtless Fallschirmjäger wearing captured British pattern shorts in Kreta, just after the end of hostilities on the island. While tropical gear was just coming into the supply stores for the German army, it was not available for the servicemen until just after the Battle of Kreta. Also note the tropical pith helmets, also taken from British/Commonwealth supplies.

  • Seventy years on, it seems amazing that the Axis attack by some 22,000 troops defeated 32,000 Allied and 10,000 Greek defenders, even without the resistance of civilian residents.
Two hundred and twenty Junkers Ju52 aircraft were destroyed. The 7th Fleiger Division suffered 40% casualties with total losses of 3,986 killed and 2,594 wounded matched against 1,751 and 1,738 for the resisters, plus an unknown number for civilians. Deaths at sea are more than doubled the Allied totals, and eventually the island 12,254 (Allied) and 5,255 (Greek) prisoners of war showed that the gamble paid off.
