I was corrected (and thankfully so) on this picture it is to be read as such:
I had set the text as
"SS-Sturmbannführer Peiper, SS-Sturmbannführer von Westernhagen, and SS-Standartenführer Witt, Kharkov 7.3.1944.”
The man who is sitting, is not Witt. It is Otto Dinse, Peiper’s adjutant. Dinse, btw, was Peiper’s friend for the whole life, he visited the Peipers often in the postwar time. He also helped to build Peiper’s house in France (where Peiper found his death in 1976).
I am indebted to “Snarka” for helping me on the correction of this picture. While I had a sneaking suspicion it was not ‘Fritzy’ it was what the book said (Yes folks even well researched history books can be wrong).
